Ferniehirst Castle

Ferniehirst Castle, Scotland's Frontier Fortress, stands high above the Jed Water, a mile and a half south of Jedburgh.

The Kerr family have owned the site since 1457 and the original castle, a peel tower built here in 1470, was destroyed in the course of many bloody battles. Hidden behind trees and the lie of the land, Ferniehirst commands the perfect setting from which to hold the gate for Scotland.

Today's Ferniehirst is based on a late 16th Century building, carefully restored by local craftsmen using traditional materials. It is open to the public each July to coincide with the local Jethart Festival.
